15 marriage biodata mistakes families notice (and how to fix each)

Most marriage biodata mistakes are small — a stale age, a cropped wedding photo, a file called “biodata final new(2).pdf” — but the family reading it has thirty others on the same phone and will not ask what you meant. Here are the fifteen mistakes that come up most, each with a before-and-after fix you can copy.

Key points
  • Keep it to one page and delete empty rows instead of leaving blanks.
  • Write income as a range and date of birth instead of age.
  • Use a recent, single-person photo and a parent’s phone number.
  • Send a clearly named PDF, and check it on a second phone before sharing.

Length and layout

1. Running to two pages. Families skim a biodata on a phone, usually among many others. Page two is often never opened — and page two is usually where the About Me and the contact number end up.

Before

Page 1: personal details, a 14-row horoscope, education. Page 2: family, About Me (190 words), partner preferences (11 points), contact.

After

One page: horoscope cut to the six fields the family actually uses, About Me cut to 60 words, preferences cut to three lines, contact placed right after family.

2. Leaving rows blank. A label with nothing after it — “Gotra:”, “Manglik:”, “Hobbies:” — makes the reader wonder whether something is being hidden, or whether the biodata was made in a hurry.

Before

Gotra: — · Nakshatra: — · Blood group: — · Manglik: —

After

Rows you do not use are deleted. Where the answer is “no”, it is written: “Manglik: No”.

Numbers, dates and money

3. Writing the exact salary. A figure to the rupee looks like a payslip, invites comparison and is out of date after the next increment. It is also unclear whether it is in-hand or CTC.

Before

Salary: ₹1,19,708 per month

After

Income: ₹16 – 18 Lakh per annum (CTC)

4. A birth time from memory. If the families match horoscopes, the astrologer’s whole reading rests on the time. The ascendant (lagna) changes roughly every two hours, so “morning” is not enough.

Before

Time of birth: early morning, around 7

After

Time of birth: 6:42 AM (as per hospital record)

5. Forgetting to update age. Biodatas are forwarded for years. One made in 2024 that says “Age: 27” is still circulating in 2026. A date of birth never goes stale. The same goes for “final year student” and old job titles.

Before

Age: 27 years · Education: MBA (pursuing)

After

Date of birth: 11 August 1998 · Education: MBA (Marketing), completed 2025

6. Listing property. Flats, acres and cars are details families discuss later, if at all. On a page that gets forwarded to strangers, they also make your family a target.

Before

Family property: 3 BHK flat in Kothrud, 12 acres irrigated land, two cars

After

Father: Runs the family farm and a fertiliser shop, Baramati

The photo

7. A face cropped from a group photo. It is blurry, has part of someone else in the frame, and signals that no one took the trouble to take a proper photo.

Before

A zoomed-in crop from a cousin’s wedding: dim hall lighting, half of a relative’s shoulder at the edge

After

A photo taken at home in ten minutes: shoulders up, facing a window in daylight, plain wall behind, phone held at eye level

8. An old photo. The families will meet you. A photo from five years and several kilos ago makes the first meeting awkward and costs trust that is hard to win back.

Before

Photo from the college farewell, 2019

After

Photo taken in the last six months, with your current hairstyle, and glasses if you wear them

The photo guide covers a simple setup with a phone.

Writing

9. A CV-style objective or declaration. People who start from a resume template keep lines that make no sense on a biodata.

Before

Career objective: To work in a challenging environment where I can utilise my skills for organisational growth. … Declaration: I hereby declare that the above information is true to the best of my knowledge.

After

About me: I work as a quality engineer at an auto-parts plant in Nashik and like the problem-solving side of it. Weekends are for cricket with school friends and cooking with my mother. I am looking for someone easy to talk to, who takes both work and family seriously.

10. Over-long partner demands. A list of conditions reads like a filter, and the families you most want to impress are often the ones who move on.

Before

Should be fair, slim, 5′ 5″ – 5′ 7″, MBA from a top college, working in Pune only, no siblings abroad, must know cooking, own house, non-manglik, same sub-caste.

After

Age 25 – 29, graduate or above, working or open to working, Pune or Mumbai preferred. Warm, honest and easy to talk to.

Leave out complexion entirely. More examples are in partner preferences that don’t sound demanding.

11. Spelling mistakes and ALL CAPITALS. Capitals are harder to read on a phone and look like shouting. A misspelt employer or parent’s name looks careless — and it is the kind of thing an uncle will point out.

Before

NAME : ROHIT DESHMUKH · QUALIFICATION : B.E (MECHNICAL) · COMPANY : TATA MOTAR’S

After

Name: Rohit Deshmukh · Education: B.E. (Mechanical), COEP, Pune · Occupation: Senior Engineer, Tata Motors, Pune

Contact and safety

12. The candidate’s own phone number. A biodata ends up in groups and on phones you will never know about. A young woman’s personal number on that page can bring calls and messages from strangers. Most families also expect the first call to go through a parent.

Before

Contact: Sneha Kulkarni (self) — 98XXXXXX45

After

Contact: Mr. Anil Kulkarni (father) — 94XXXXXX12 · Best time to call: 10 AM – 8 PM

What else to keep off the page is covered in contact details in a marriage biodata.

The file you send

13. A screenshot or JPG instead of a PDF. WhatsApp compresses images every time they are forwarded. By the third forward the phone number is hard to read, and the image will not print cleanly.

Before

Screenshot_20260812-213344.jpg, sent from the gallery

After

Sneha_Kulkarni_Biodata.pdf, sent as a Document

14. A filename that says nothing. The person receiving it already has a dozen files called “biodata”. A clear name lets a mother find yours again next week, and does not advertise that there were five drafts.

Before

biodata final new(2).pdf

After

Rohit_Deshmukh_Biodata_2026.pdf

15. Fonts that break Hindi or Marathi. A Word file typed in an old non-Unicode font such as Kruti Dev turns into random English letters on a phone that does not have that font. Even with a Unicode font, a .docx can shift its layout when opened on a phone.

Before

Hindi biodata sent as a .docx typed in Kruti Dev; on the other family’s phone it shows as jumbled Latin letters

After

Typed in a Unicode font (Mangal, Nirmala UI or Noto Sans Devanagari), exported to PDF, and opened on a second phone to check

A two-minute check before you send

Open the PDF on your own phone at normal zoom and go through this list once:

  • Everything fits on one page, and there are no empty rows.
  • Date of birth, not age; income as a range; no property.
  • The birth time matches the hospital record or the horoscope made at birth.
  • The photo is recent and shows only you.
  • Names of parents, college and employer are spelt correctly.
  • The phone number is a parent’s, and every digit is right — read it aloud.
  • The file is a PDF with your name in the filename.
  • Indian-language text looks right on someone else’s phone.

If you make it in Marriage Biodata Maker, the app exports a print-ready A4 PDF and shares it straight to WhatsApp — but the facts on it are still yours to check. Ask one person outside the family, such as a cousin or a friend, to read it too. They will notice what you have stopped seeing.

Frequently asked questions

What should not be written in a marriage biodata?
Property and family wealth, an exact salary, complexion, a CV-style objective or declaration, Aadhaar or a full address, and the candidate’s own number on a version that will be widely forwarded.
Should a marriage biodata be one page or two?
One page. If it runs longer, shorten About Me and partner preferences first, then trim horoscope fields your family does not use.
Should I write age or date of birth in a biodata?
Date of birth. Biodatas are forwarded for years, and a written age quickly becomes wrong.
Can I send my biodata as a photo on WhatsApp?
It is better to send a PDF as a document. Photos are compressed on every forward and become hard to read.
How often should I update my marriage biodata?
Whenever your job, city, income range or photo changes, and check it every few months even if nothing has — especially titles like “pursuing” or “final year”.
