Writing
How to write education qualification in a marriage biodata (with examples)
Education is one of the first lines a family reads, and one of the easiest to get wrong — too vague, too long, or written in short forms the other family does not understand. Here is how to write education qualification in marriage biodata for every common situation, from a B.Tech in final year to ITI, 12th pass or a degree from abroad.
- Write your highest qualification first, with the college or university and city.
- Two or three lines are enough; skip marks, percentages and school details.
- Write “pursuing” or “final year” with the expected completion date if you are still studying.
- Never claim a degree you have not completed — it is the easiest thing for a family to check.
The basic rule: highest qualification first
Write each qualification on one line as degree (subject), institution, city, starting with the highest. Stop at your first degree — families do not need your school name or 10th marks unless 12th is your highest qualification.
Good
MBA (Marketing), IIM Indore · B.Com, St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata
Too little
Post graduate
Too much
MBA (Marketing), IIM Indore, 2019–2021, CGPA 3.4 · B.Com (Hons), St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, 78% · 12th, 91%, Don Bosco School · 10th, 94%
The second example tells a family nothing useful; the third buries the useful part in marks nobody asked for.
How much detail to include
| Detail | Include? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Degree and subject | Yes | The core fact: B.Tech (Mechanical) says more than B.Tech |
| College or university name | Yes | Families recognise institutions; add the city if the name is not well known |
| Year of passing | Optional | Useful if you are recently qualified or had a gap; otherwise skip |
| Percentage, CGPA or rank | Usually no | A gold medal or university rank can go in one short phrase |
| School name, 10th and 12th | Only if 12th is your highest | Otherwise it takes space and adds nothing |
| Professional certifications | If relevant to your work | One line, not a list |
Short forms families understand, and ones to expand
Common degrees are fine as short forms. Less common ones should be expanded once, because the reader is often a parent or grandparent, not someone from your field.
| Short form | Write it as |
|---|---|
| B.Tech / B.E., M.Tech | As is, with branch: B.E. (Civil) |
| MBBS, MD, MS | As is, with speciality: MD (Paediatrics) |
| BDS, BAMS, BHMS | Add in brackets: BAMS (Ayurvedic medicine) |
| CA, CS, CMA | Chartered Accountant (CA) — the full form helps older readers |
| MBA, PGDM | MBA (Finance); PGDM (postgraduate management diploma), with the institute |
| B.Ed, D.El.Ed | B.Ed (teacher training) if the reader may not know it |
| BCA, MCA, B.Sc (IT) | As is |
| LLB, LLM | LLB (law), with the college |
| B.Pharm, D.Pharm | B.Pharm (pharmacy) |
| Ph.D. | Ph.D. (Chemistry), with the university; write “pursuing” if not awarded |
Examples for common situations
Engineer
B.Tech (Electronics & Communication), NIT Warangal
Doctor
MD (General Medicine), Government Medical College, Nagpur · MBBS, same college
Chartered Accountant
Chartered Accountant (CA) · B.Com, Narsee Monjee College, Mumbai
Still studying
B.Tech (Computer Science), final year, VIT Vellore — completing in 2027
Professional course in progress
B.Com, Mithibai College, Mumbai · CA Final (Group 1 cleared, Group 2 pending)
Diploma
Diploma in Civil Engineering, Government Polytechnic, Nashik
ITI
ITI (Electrician), Government ITI, Aurangabad · Technician, Bajaj Auto, Waluj
12th pass
12th (Commerce), Maharashtra State Board · manages the family grocery wholesale business, Latur
Distance or open university
B.A. (Political Science), IGNOU
Two postgraduate degrees
M.Sc (Chemistry), Savitribai Phule Pune University · B.Ed
Notice that the diploma, ITI and 12th examples add the work straight after. When your education line is short, the career line carries the weight, and pairing them gives a fair picture.
Gaps, dropped courses and unfinished degrees
Families notice a gap between your degree and your first job, and a blank invites guessing. One factual line is enough:
Gap for exam preparation
B.Sc (Physics), Fergusson College, Pune, 2018 · 2018–2021: prepared for state civil services · Since 2021: Assistant, Collector Office, Pune
Gap for family reasons
B.Com, Osmania University, 2019 · 2019–2021: at home during father’s illness · Since 2021: runs the family hardware shop, Hyderabad
Course not completed
12th (Science) · Studied B.Tech for two years (not completed) · Now runs a mobile repair shop, Indore
Write the qualification you actually hold. A family that later learns a degree was never completed will doubt everything else on the page, including the parts that are true.
Degrees from abroad
Name the university and the country, and keep your Indian degree on the next line. If the foreign qualification needs an Indian licensing step, mention whether it is done.
Master’s abroad
MS (Computer Science), University of Texas at Dallas, USA · B.E. (IT), PICT, Pune
Medicine abroad
MBBS, Kazan State Medical University, Russia · FMGE cleared · Junior Resident, Bhopal
Studying abroad now
MSc (Data Science), University of Glasgow, UK — completing in 2027 · B.Tech, Manipal Institute of Technology
Certifications and government exam preparation
Certifications: add one only if it matters to your work, and on the same line as your degree. “B.Com · ACCA (UK) qualified” is useful; a list of online course certificates is not.
Exam preparation: being a UPSC, MPSC or bank exam aspirant is common and nothing to hide. Say what you are preparing for, anything already cleared, and what you do alongside.
Aspirant
B.A. (History), Hindu College, Delhi University · Preparing for UPSC Civil Services; cleared Prelims 2025 · Teaches history part-time at a coaching institute
If you have already been selected for a government post, see the biodata guide for government employees for how to write the post and posting.
Where education sits on the page
Education goes in the education and career section, just above your job title, employer and income range — see what to write in a marriage biodata for the rest of that section. Before you send the biodata, check three things:
- Degree names are spelled the way they appear on the certificate: B.Tech, not Btech or B-tech
- The college name is complete enough to identify it: “Government College” alone could be anywhere
- “Pursuing” and completion years are still correct — update them the month your result is out
