Horoscope details in a marriage biodata: what to write and how
If your family follows horoscope matching, the horoscope section is what the other family’s astrologer reads first. A wrong birth time or a missing detail can hold up a match for weeks. Here is what to include, how to write each field, and regional differences to know.
- Exact date, time and place of birth matter most — the rest is calculated from them.
- Add rashi, nakshatra, gotra and manglik status in plain terms.
- A kundli or jathagam chart is optional; send it separately if asked.
- If your family does not follow it, remove the section entirely.
Do you need a horoscope section at all?
Only if your family follows horoscope matching (kundli milan or porutham). Many families do not, and a half-filled horoscope section looks worse than none. If you are unsure, ask your parents — and if they do not use it, delete the section.
The details that matter most
Every other horoscope detail is calculated from three facts. Get these exactly right:

Write the time in AM/PM or 24-hour format, but not “early morning”. If the time is uncertain, say “approx. 7 AM” so the astrologer knows.
Other fields and how to write them

You do not need all of these. Birth details, rashi, nakshatra, gotra and manglik status cover what most families ask for. The astrologer can work out gan, nadi and guna milan from the birth details.
Regional differences
- North and West India: rashi, nakshatra, gotra and manglik status are usual; guna milan is done by the family astrologer.
- Tamil Nadu and Kerala: families often mention star (natchathiram), raasi and lagnam, and may attach a jathagam with raasi and navamsa charts. Some also note dosham (e.g. chevvai dosham).
- Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh: nakshatra, rashi and gotra are common; a jataka or jatakam may be requested separately.
- Bengal: rashi, nakshatra, gan and gotra are often included.
Should you attach the full kundli chart?
Usually not on the biodata page. A chart takes up space and is only useful to an astrologer. Put the key facts on the biodata, and share the kundli or jathagam as a separate PDF or photo when a family asks. This keeps the biodata to one page.

Common mistakes
- Writing the time from memory instead of the birth certificate
- Mixing up rashi (moon sign) with your sun sign from a magazine horoscope
- Leaving manglik status blank — write “Non-manglik” if that is the case
- Filling only half the fields — either complete the key ones or remove the section
