Marriage biodata for a doctor: degrees, PG status, work hours and a sample
A doctor’s biodata is read by two kinds of families: medical families who know exactly what “DNB, second year” means, and non-medical families who do not. Write it so both understand — degrees in the right order, where you are in training, and what the next few years look like.
- List degrees in sequence with the institute: MBBS, then MD, MS or DNB, then DM or MCh.
- If you are in training, give the year and the expected completion date.
- Be honest about moving for PG or a fellowship, and about night duties.
- Write stipend or income as a range; it changes a lot between training and practice.
How to write medical degrees
Write degrees in the order you earned them, each with its institute, on one line. Add the speciality in brackets. Families with doctors will look for the college names; families without doctors will look for the speciality, so write it in plain words.
| Degree | What it is | How to write it |
|---|---|---|
| MBBS | The basic medical degree, including a one-year internship | MBBS, Grant Government Medical College, Mumbai (2019) |
| MD | Postgraduate degree in a non-surgical speciality | MD (General Medicine), AIIMS New Delhi |
| MS | Postgraduate degree in a surgical speciality | MS (Orthopaedics), JIPMER, Puducherry |
| DNB | Postgraduate qualification from the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, trained in accredited hospitals | DNB (Paediatrics), Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi |
| DM / MCh / DrNB | Super-speciality training after MD, MS or DNB | DM (Cardiology), Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute, Thiruvananthapuram |
| Diploma (DCH, DGO, DA) | Two-year postgraduate diplomas held by many practising doctors | DGO, BJ Medical College, Pune |
| Fellowship | Short focused training after PG | Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology, Narayana Health, Bengaluru |
| Foreign qualification | Exams or degrees from abroad | MRCP (UK) · USMLE Step 1 and 2 cleared |
Dentists (BDS, MDS) and AYUSH doctors (BAMS, BHMS, BUMS) follow the same pattern: degree, college, speciality. Always write the degree beside “Dr.” so the family knows your field.
Where you are in training
For a non-medical family, “MD Anaesthesiology” could mean you finished in 2019 or started last month. Say which, and when you will be done.
Intern
MBBS (internship until March 2027), Government Medical College, Nagpur
Preparing for PG
MBBS, Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru (2025) · Preparing for NEET-PG; working as a medical officer at a private hospital meanwhile
Resident
MD (Anaesthesiology) — second-year resident, Madras Medical College, Chennai; completes June 2027
Bond service
MS (General Surgery), completing a one-year government bond posting at the district hospital, Satara (until May 2027)
Consultant
Consultant Nephrologist, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad (since 2023)
If the family reading it is not medical, add a plain line in About Me: “I am in the second year of specialist training in anaesthesia and will finish in 2027.”
NEET-PG, relocation and the next five years
This is the part families most need and doctors most often leave out. PG seats are allotted through counselling, so a doctor preparing for NEET-PG may end up in a different city — or state — for three years. Fellowships, super-speciality seats and training abroad add more moves. The other family is planning their child’s career and home around yours, so say it plainly:
Example
Preparing for NEET-PG; may move to another city for a PG seat. Plans to settle in Bengaluru after training.
Example
Plans a one-year fellowship in the UK after MS (2027 – 28), then to practise in Pune.
Example
Settled as a consultant in Lucknow; not planning to relocate.
Work hours: say it once, calmly
Residency means night duty and 24-hour calls; surgery and obstetrics mean emergencies at any hour; private practice often means evening clinics. A partner who knows this in advance adjusts far better than one who discovers it after the wedding. One honest sentence in About Me is enough:
Example
My residency has long hours and some night duties until mid-2027. After that I plan to join a hospital in Pune with more regular timings.
Example
I run an evening clinic six days a week, so my mornings and Sundays are free.
Stipend, income and where you work
Write the hospital, department and city. For income, a resident can write “Stipend as resident” or a range; a consultant or doctor in private practice should give an annual range, averaged if it varies. For a government doctor, add the post and pay level. The guide to salary in a biodata covers ranges in detail.
| Stage | Example income line |
|---|---|
| Resident | Stipend as MD resident (government medical college) |
| Senior resident | ₹12 – 14 Lakh per annum |
| Consultant, private hospital | ₹30 – 40 Lakh per annum |
| Own clinic plus visiting consultant | ₹25 – 35 Lakh per annum (average of last three years) |
Leave out your registration number, patient stories, lists of conferences and publications. One line for a notable achievement — “Gold medal in MS Orthopaedics” — is plenty.
Partner preferences doctor families often write
Doctor preferred
Age 27–31, MBBS with PG, from any speciality. Open to relocating for training.
Medical or non-medical
Age 26–30, well-educated and working, doctor or non-medico, comfortable with a doctor’s working hours.
Non-medical welcome
Age 25–30, graduate or above, any profession. Understanding of long hospital shifts.
“Doctor only” narrows the matches a lot. If both families genuinely prefer it, write “doctor preferred”; if not, “non-medico welcome” tells families they need not hesitate.
