Assamese marriage biodata format (with Assamese terms and a sample)

Assamese families exchange biodatas the way families elsewhere do — on WhatsApp, through relatives and at family gatherings — with a few local habits in the family and horoscope sections. Here is the Assamese marriage biodata format in order, the Assamese terms to use, the font problems to avoid, and a full sample.

The sections in order

Keep it to one A4 page with one photo. If your family does not follow horoscope matching, remove that section rather than leaving it half-filled.

Common fields with Assamese terms

Assamese shares most letters with Bengali but has its own ৰ (ra) and ৱ (wa). Words like তাৰিখ and ধৰ্ম are spelt with ৰ, not the Bengali র — a quick way to tell whether a template was really made for Assamese. Wording varies a little between writers; if an elder in the family prefers a different term, use theirs.

Horoscope details

Many Assamese Hindu families consult horoscopes before a marriage. If yours does, write the birth details exactly and add the few fields the astrologer will ask for:

Older family records sometimes note a birth by the Assamese calendar month — Bohag, Jeth, Ahar and so on. Put the English date on the biodata and give the other to the astrologer if asked. The full chart can go as a separate file. See horoscope details in a biodata for each field.

Gotra, community and satra

Gotra is common on Assamese Hindu biodatas, but not every family uses it; some communities follow their own clan or lineage customs. Write what your family uses, or leave the row out. Mention community only if your family normally would, and if it does not matter, say “community no bar” in expectations.

Some Vaishnavite families mention the satra they are associated with — for example, “Family are disciples of a satra in Majuli”. It is optional, one line, and only worth including if it matters to your family.

Family details

Write parents with their occupations, then brothers and sisters with what they do and whether they are married. Native place matters: many families now live in Guwahati but still identify with a home town or district, so give both.

In Assamese, the kinship words do the work: ককাই (elder brother), বাইদেউ (elder sister), ভাই (younger brother), ভনী (younger sister). Spell the surname exactly as the family does — Baruah, Barua and Boruah are all in use, and a mismatch with documents causes confusion later. More on this section in family details in a biodata.

English, Assamese or both

• English is the usual choice when the other family lives outside Assam, abroad, or reads English more comfortably.
• Assamese is often preferred by grandparents and by families in smaller towns.
• English with Assamese labels in brackets works for both, and is what the sample below uses.

If you make two versions, keep every date, name and number identical in both. Read the Assamese one on a phone before sending.

Fonts and typing

Assamese text breaks in two common ways. The first is an old non-Unicode typing font: it looks right on the computer it was typed on and turns into random letters on everyone else’s phone. The second is a font with no Assamese letters, which shows empty boxes where ৰ or ৱ should be.

• On a phone: add Assamese to Gboard and type; the text is Unicode by default.
• On Windows: Nirmala UI displays Assamese correctly and is already installed.
• Other free fonts: Noto Sans Bengali and Noto Serif Bengali cover the Assamese letters.
• Always export a PDF with the fonts embedded, and never send a screenshot — it blurs every time it is forwarded.
