Odia marriage biodata format: fields, Odia terms and a sample
Families in Odisha — and Odia families in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and abroad — still exchange a biodata before the first visit, and elders often want the koshthi details on it. This Odia marriage biodata format works in English, Odia or both, with the Odia term for every field and a complete sample you can adapt.
- Use the usual order: personal, koshthi, education and career, family, about me, preferences, contact.
- Add rashi, nakshatra, gana and gotra only if your family matches koshthi.
- English with Odia labels in brackets suits relatives both in Odisha and outside.
- Type Odia in a Unicode font and send a PDF, or the conjunct letters can break.
What an Odia biodata usually contains

Many Odia families print “Jay Jagannath” (ଜୟ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥ) at the top, the way families elsewhere use Shree Ganeshay Namah. It is a matter of family custom; the biodata is complete without it.
Field names in English and Odia
If you make a bilingual biodata, put the Odia term in brackets after the English label, or the other way round. These are the common terms:

Koshthi details: rashi, nakshatra, gana and gotra
Families that match koshthi before moving towards Nirbandha (the formal engagement) usually want these on the biodata. If your family does not, delete the whole section rather than leaving it half-filled.

Rashi names as they are usually written in Odia: Mesha (ମେଷ), Brusha (ବୃଷ), Mithuna (ମିଥୁନ), Karkata (କର୍କଟ), Simha (ସିଂହ), Kanya (କନ୍ୟା), Tula (ତୁଳା), Bichha (ବିଛା), Dhanu (ଧନୁ), Makara (ମକର), Kumbha (କୁମ୍ଭ) and Mina (ମୀନ). Family details
Family details in Odia biodatas are usually written in full, because families often try to find a common connection — a relative in the same village, or someone from the same office.
- Parents: full names with occupation and where they work or worked, for example “Retired Senior Assistant, Collectorate, Cuttack”.
- Late parent: “Late (ସ୍ୱର୍ଗତ) Bijay Kumar Sahoo” — no further detail is needed.
- Siblings: elder or younger, married or not, what they do and where.
- Native place: village or town with the district, for example “Salepur, Cuttack district”.
- Family type: nuclear or joint.
- Caste or sub-caste: include only if your family normally does. If it does not matter, you can write “caste no bar” in preferences.
As in any biodata, leave out land, houses and family income. They can be discussed once both families want to go further.
Writing in Odia: fonts and phones
Odia uses many conjunct letters (ଯୁକ୍ତାକ୍ଷର), such as the କ୍ଷ in ନକ୍ଷତ୍ର. These are the first thing to break when a file is opened on a phone without the right font.
- Type in a Unicode Odia font — Kalinga or Nirmala UI on Windows, or Noto Sans Oriya — not an older DTP font from a print shop.
- On a phone, add the Odia (ଓଡ଼ିଆ) keyboard in Gboard or your phone’s keyboard settings.
- Export to PDF and send the PDF, not the Word file.
- Open the PDF on a second phone and check the conjuncts and vowel signs look right.
